This blog (and the course) are about natural resources. One of the challenges of this topic is figuring out what exactly natural resources are. Some folks seem to associate the term with things that we can extract from the earth (oil, gas, minerals, timber) and then use or sell. Others might think of natural resources as any bounty the earth provides to man. The phrase seems inextricably anthropocentric though. Can we even contemplate natural resources without thinking about how they benefit us? The term “resources” hampers such an investigation. Resources tells us that we are talking about things that nature supplies us. Dictionaries declare that the phrase means something that is an asset or provides support for a certain goal. Hence, without man there are no natural resources.
