Scientists Set Out To Search ‘Virtually Unknown Waters’ November 8, 2011

In today’s day in age it’s hard to believe there is still parts of this world that are still undiscovered.  While it would be pretty interesting if they found a new species or two deep in the Indian Ocean, it got me thinking what would happen if they found something even more important.

What if the cure for cancer was lying at the bottom of the Indian Ocean? In class we read about the struggles over control of Oysters in New Jersey. One can only imagine the frenzy that would ensue if something so important were found. Who would claim ownership & control? Who would be the first to arrive with guns to defend it?

Obviously this is all very hypothetical but we have seen the fight for land and objects underwater here in the States on a very small scale. I guess in the end this potentially could be a “good” problem but on an International scale like this its interesting to think about.
